Satisfying the ultimate rose gold and marble lovers, Birchbox have gone all out with their box design for their May ‘It’s all in the details’ theme but it’s one of those situations where I’m more in love with the box design and not so overly excited by my contents which doesn’t happen often but I guess I just was unlucky this month. Nonetheless this month’s line-up touches on hair, skin and body care and not one but two make-up treats and even though this wasn’t my favourite curation from them there’s a couple of items that have sparked my interest.

Birchbox is a monthly beauty subscription service. The box consists of 5 luxe beauty treats from well-known brands and emerging brands and occasionally you may also receive a lifestyle item too. Birchbox is also a full-blown beauty destination where you can purchase all the brands which have been featured in their boxes and this month also sees the introduction of their new reward programme Birchbox Benefits

1. Marsk Mineral Eyeshadow– Full size RRP £14.49

For May all subscribers had the opportunity to choose one of two eyeshadow shades from Marsk and I’ve got to admit I got introduced to this same product a couple of years ago, it’s not a bad product but I’m just not a fan of loose eyeshadows and I would have actually preferred a lighter shade for this time of the year. This mineral based eyeshadow by Marsk is 100% natural and the shade Fifty shades is a sultry dark grey, perfect for creating a smokey eye look. You can use this wet or dry to create anything from a day look to something more captivating for the evenings.

2. Doucce Punk Volumizer Mascara – Travel Size. Full Size RRP £18.00

Up next on the make-up front is the Doucce Punk Volumizer Mascara, a US brand I recently got introduced to and they combine high fashion hues and contemporary packaging, to create the perfect combination of trendy and très chic.

The Doucce Punk Volumizer Mascara promises to define lashes one by one, adding extreme volume and thickness to your lashes for an audacious false-look effect with a lightweight and creamy formula that pulls every lash upwards to create a long lasting curl without any clumping, flaking, or smudging.

Apart from the brush which I found really hard to work with, the formula was pretty good on the volumizing front providing you don’t layer it on too much as it tends to clump but it didn’t provide much results for me in terms of lengthening. It’s not the best mascara I’ve come across but I’ll definitely get use of this as an everyday mascara.

3. Whish Firming Body Cream – Travel size 22ml. Full size RRP £27.00

This body cream will leave your skin smoother and softer while clinically proven ingredients banish the appearance of unwanted blemishes. Skin will appear, toned, firmed, and perfected.

Thanks to Birchbox, Whish has very quickly become one of my favourite brands when it comes to body lotions, their formula’s are silky, creamy, very moisturising with a non-sticky finish and smell absolutely divine so I’m looking forward to try out their firming version.

4. Dr Brandt Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliant – Travel size 7.5g. Full size RRP £67.00

Dr. Brandt is one of those brands I’ve seen around quite a bit lately in the beauty world but I haven’t had much experience with their products so I was happy to receive something new to try from their collection.

Inspired by Dr. Brandt’s in-office microdermabrasion, this breakthrough at-home solution, offers transformative brightening and smoothing effects in minimal time. Lactic acid and perfectly rounded aluminum oxide crystals gently whisk away dead skin cells and is ideal for all skin types.

5. Kueshi Hair Mask Shine and Volume – Travel size 50ml. Full size RRP £10.50

I’m always on the hunt for hair products that strike a happy medium for me – something that will help my hair look great while still being realistic for my hectic lifestyle and this 3 minute hair mask sounds perfect! Packed with rice proteins, calendula oil, jojoba oil, and shea butter this delivers an injection of hydration to lacklustre strands, boosts that natural colour of your hair, and boosts volume at the roots.

My Verdict

While this wasn’t my favourite curation from Birchbox by no means was it a bad one, I guess I just wasn’t very much in love or overly excited with the samples I received this month which rarely happens but if I’m completely honest I think I was more captivated by the box design as opposed to the contents! On a positive note the line-up did contain a good selection on the beauty front and there’s a couple of products such as the body lotion and the hair mask that I’m particularly looking forward to trying out plus all the samples were generous in size  so you’ll definitely be able to judge whether they work for you or not.

If you like trying out products from well-known, loved and emerging brands then Birchbox is definitely great for this. The subscription itself is affordable and the monthly rotation of treats introduces you to brands and products you might not have otherwise found, all of which can be purchased within their online shop.
