I’ve been waiting eagerly for the January Birchbox to land on my doorstep and here’s why… Of course there is the usual excitement of getting some awesome new products to try and review but this month in particular I was probably more drawn to the beautiful flamingo drawer design which just channels those happy vibes all thanks to Ohh deer! Thankfully though, my contents turned out to be pretty fabulous too and included mainly makeup (yay!) mostly from brands I’ve not had the opportunity to try before so that was certainly a lovely bonus.
Birchbox is a monthly beauty subscription service. The box consists of 5 luxe beauty treats from well-known brands and emerging brands and occasionally you may also receive a lifestyle item too. Birchbox is also a full-blown beauty destination where you can purchase all the brands which have been featured in their boxes.
Here’s what I received inside my *January box (Contents may vary. Please see the January spoiler post to see what you may receive)
Up first and the one item I was secretly hoping would make its way inside my box is the Paul & Joe Beauty Primer in the shade 01 Dagree (Sample Size 10ml), a moisturising primer infused with orange flower water which forms the base of this formula, along with 3 types of hyaluronic acid that absorb into the skin at different rates throughout the day to keep your complexion hydrated and boosted at all times. The powerful combination of ingredients merge in a lightweight formula to act as a flexible veil over the skin, helping your makeup stay put for longer whilst banishing excess sebum production to maintain complexion perfection all day long! I love miniature makeup products and this little sample is just the cutest plus it’s definitely one of the better quality primers I’ve tried – it feels and smells luxurious, and is super hydrating too.
Sticking to makeup, all subscribers can expect to see the Lord & Berry Blusher Crayon (Full size RRP £15.00) inside their box this month and you’ll also be able to pick the shade you want from two variants. I received Peach which is very wearable and won’t fail to help perk up the skin.
Up next is the Marcelle Waterproof Eyeliner (Travel size) in the shade Charcoal and although eyeliners do pop up frequently inside beauty boxes I really don’t mind receiving them as it’s something that I use on daily basis plus I love seeing how they compare with my current favourite liner by NARS! The formula is pretty good, it’s really creamy and easy to work with but the shade isn’t as dark as what I usually opt for.
When it comes to makeup removal (ugh!), I’m sure you’ll agree it’s such a chore and is definitely one of my least favourite processes (brushing cleaning is another!) but if there’s something out there to make my life that little easier I want in…cue the Afterspa Makeup Remover (Sample Size). This magic little cloth is made with ultra-soft woven polyester-blend cloth free of chemicals and promises to remove all types of make-up with just some warm water! It’s also reusable, can be washed in the washing machine and lasts up to 1000 washes! I’m quite sceptical with these types of fads but this works wonders on removing foundation however isn’t as great when removing stubborn eyeliner and mascara. Nonetheless it’s such a handy essential to have on standby especially when you’ve had a late night and can’t be bothered to do a full cleanse but I’m kind of wishing Birchbox included the bigger version.
Lastly out of the box is the Thermaliv Soin Nuit Hydractiv (Sample size 15ml), a cream designed to reinvigorate and hydrate your complexion overnight to guarantee a beautifully nourished complexion by morning. The ultra hydrating dream trio of karité butter, jojoba oil and papyrus extract work in harmony to create smoother skin that has improved elasticity and strength. Ideal for normal, dry or dehydrated skin.
My Verdict
Brightening up the month of January, this month’s Birchbox had it all from the gorgeous flamingo print, the collaboration with Ohh deer right through to the contents. I’ve got to admit I always dread the January beauty box curations as they usually focus more on the skin care element so I was really surprised that I ended up with mainly makeup this month which never happens as their line-up’s are usually much more varied not that I’m complaining as for me it was the perfect selection to start the year with. On the downside, the sample were a little on the teeny side this month but overall I’ve come across a few new favourites include the Paul & Joe primer (it’s definitely one of the better quality primers I’ve tried) and the makeup removal cloth is something I’m already using and love – it really does work however I think I would definitely benefit from the bigger sized one! Another bonus thanks to this month’s collaboration with Oh Deer is you can get 50% off your first Papergang Box when you subscribe to the 3 month plan – oh did I mention you also get some cute stickers!
