There’s a new beauty and self-care box in town and it’s the Ayllu Box – isn’t she pretty! With sustainability, natural Ingredients, plastic-free and supporting UK small businesses in mind their collection of one-off boxes mean you do not need to commit to a subscription and with three different themed edits available they are a beautifully curated introduction to small eco-conscious companies which in turn will indeed be new to some of us which is exciting. The Ayllu Box very kindly gifted me their Self-care Box which is full of products that don’t leave a lasting impact on the environment. Their other options include The Everyday Treats Box and The Shine Box, all of which have different variations in terms of a couple of the products which is always a bonus in case you prefer one item over another i.e. bath bomb or a soap (not all of us have bath tubs so this is a great idea! Oh did I mention that the packaging and presentation is perfection, the founder is truly very passionate and this most certainly shines through across the curations.
Ayllu is an indigenous word, more specifically a Quechuan and Aymaran word, which are both languages spoken by indigenous peoples of the Andes. It is a term that dates back prior to the Inca conquest and refers to a traditional form of community or a network of families in the Andes. This term continues to exist and be used till this very day within these communities.
Ayllus have traditionally acted as forms of local government and largely referred to extended families and kin groups within a territory. However, the main factor was that each ayllu was self-sustaining as all members had a responsibility to one another, whether this was in terms of education, land, food or trade.
When I decided to start my own small sustainable business all I could think of was how this is a community in itself. And if I’ve learnt anything from both my studies and work it is that we all have our own part and responsibility in addressing climate change.
