The temperature has plummeted, Christmas is a distant memory, I’m back to work and my bank balance is looking rather sad – why hello there January!  With all the fun and excitement now over there’s no denying that the start of the new year can be a little miserable and while summer seems a very long way off this month’s Birchbox which comes in a cheery pop of yellow will not fail to help you step into a brighter, happier January! Did I mention that they’ve come up with a really cute theme for their January edition – “Sprinkle Happiness” and my box is the perfect curation in accordance with my likes and includes a lovely selection of new discoveries to brighten even the most miserable of days!

Birchbox is a monthly beauty subscription service. The box consists of 5 luxe beauty treats from well-known brands and emerging brands and occasionally you may also receive a lifestyle item too. Birchbox is also a full-blown beauty destination where you can purchase all the brands which have been featured in their boxes with an exceptional and very generous reward program.

1. Nuxe Multi-Usage Dry Oil Shimmer – Sample size 10ml

I think the only dud amongst the line up this month is the Nuxe Prodigieuse OR multi-usage dry oil not because I don’t like it in fact it’s great for the winter months to cheat that glow but it’s been featured countless times inside a number of boxes so I really didn’t need to another one to join the other five samples I already own!

Described to be used on the face, body and hair, this give a beautiful veil of soft golden shimmer to cheat that glow and luminosity, it’s like liquid gold in a bottle!

The consistency is quite thin and applies without any streaks and as the name suggests the finish is dry so you won’t feel oily or sticky. If you love perfumed body products then you’re in for a real treat as this carries the same signature scent as the original Nuxe Prodigieuse Oil and needless to say it’s absolutely gorgeous.

 2. Merci Handy Hand Cream – Full size 30ml RRP £4.90

Merci Handy made their way inside our Birchbox last year and I’m so delighted that they’ve made a return as this budget friendly brand create some amazing products that smell so, so good! This time round all subscribers can expect to see a full size version of their hand cream which come in variety of scents. I received New Wave which is what I was hoping for as I was lucky to receive the very same hand sanitiser last year so I now have a matching pair!

The formula melts into the skin and quickly absorbs leaving behind a silky smooth surface without that greasy feel and a gorgeous trace of the scent.

3. Nails Inc Polish – Sample size 4ml

Nails Inc makes some of my favourite nail polishes, I think the majority of my collection consists of their polishes so I was excited to receive the shade Stratford from their special effects range as it’s such a unique hue with a chrome-like metallic finish.

4. Lord & Berry Conceal- It Crayon in Beige – Full size RRP £12.00

Truth be told I don’t think I’ve ever tried a concealer in a pencil form so thank you Birchbox for the opportunity! I do think it was a little risky for them to include this as we’ve all got different skin tones but for me the shade Beige was very comparable to the colour I wear normally so that was lucky!

Promising an even application for a luxurious, flawless finish and moisture to the skin, the pencil provides medium, buildable coverage to hide minor flaws, dark circles, blemishes and fine lines. The concealer itself has a creamy and lightweight texture and is a good choice for highlighting and using under the eyes. Being in a pencil form it enables me to apply the concealer quickly and on the go if needed making it incredibly travel friendly too! My only gripe is that you have to sharpen it!

5. Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream in Acai Grapefruit – Sample size 22ml

Another gem I was introduced to when I was a fairly new Birchbox subscriber was Whish, a brand known for their delectable smelling, high quality bath and body products. This shaving cream is pretty far off from your average foaming gel, it’s much more like a thick, hydrating lotion that protects the skin and helps you get a close shave without stripping your skin – the Acai Grapefruit fragrance is pleasantly fruity too!

My Verdict

So there you have it! As you can see I was pretty happy with everything inside my box this month’s with the exception of the Nuxe product but in terms of my likes, Birchbox really nailed it with all the new discoveries and quite a few of the products have already made their way to my favourites pile – I think I was even more excited by this particular box because it contained another product from Merci Handy! Line up wise they covered a good area of beauty ranging from body care, nails and make up featureing both full size and generous size samples so you’ll be able to judge whether you like them or not. As always Birchbox gets full marks on their design and it was really refreshing to see the brightly coloured drawer box in a pop of yellow with a cute theme to match too. Needless to say they definitely brought some cheer to the miserable month of January!

If you like trying out products from well-known, loved and emerging brands then Birchbox is definitely great for this. The subscription itself is affordable and the monthly rotation of treats introduces you to brands and products you might not have otherwise found, all of which can be purchased within their online shop. Whilst Birchbox send out smaller samples with 1-2 full sized items, in my opinion they are much more consistent and are more likely to send you something that you feel the need to purchase.

In other news: From February, you’ll be able to choose an element of your Birchbox, such as the design or a product – every single month!
